Jumpstarting A Vehicle with A Dead Battery

It happens at the most inopportune times. The car won't start; now what to do. You could jump start it and here's how.

According to the service technicians at Lithia Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram FIAT of Eugene in Eugene, OR jump starting a vehicle is no big deal if you know what you are doing.

  1. Identify the negative and positive battery posts on your vehicle and the one providing the jump start.
  2. Ensure that the ignition on both vehicles is turned off.
  3. First, attach the negative and positive jumper cable ends to their corresponding battery posts on the car that won't start.
  4. Next, attach the other positive cable end to the positive battery post on the vehicle with the good battery and the negative cable end can be placed on the negative battery post or another metal frame component of that vehicle.
  5. Now, start the engine with the charged battery and allow it to run a few minutes before attempting to start the other car.
  6. Turn the ignition switch on the disabled vehicle to see if it will start.

If the car starts, you are back in business.
